What is the Measurement of a Person's Value?

Unfortunately, my computer is still having issues. But no worry, i will have a technician fix my computer asap. Anyways, the other week i went to the supermarket to buy our home supply. You know, shampoo, soap, food and many more. I went out in white t-shirt, jeans and slippers. My hair was tied in pony tail. Just the simple me. Heck, it was not really the simple me. Let us just say that I was not on my best features that day.

As I was on the cashier paying for my grocery items, the woman beside me were already impatient. Perhaps i had so many bags and she could not wait for her turn. She raised her eye brow and looked at me from head to toe. She was definitely seizing me. Well, what can i do? I stand in the line before her. I waited for my turn. Why cant she? Or at least that was whats on my mind then. And because I do not want to lose my composure, i would rather not waste my anger to petty things.

I had the same experience when I was looking for a clothing. I was also not on my best features then. When the sales lady saw me, she followed my slightest move. And when I asked the price of a particular item, she replied " That is expensive, you can not afford that".  Do you know what came to my mind? My first instinct was to ask the sales lady " How much are you earning per month?"  I was itching to continue "I do not know your fixed income, but i bet my income is times three of yours."  Well, that was the first thoughts that registered in my brain. I was thankful I was able to control my mouth. I did not say the words in my mind. Perhaps the sane thing to do was to speak to her manager. Well...

My next grocery schedule was different. The difference was that I came out enhancing the good features of me. I even wore jewelries. I dressed smartly that day. But then, the quantity of my grocery items did not change. It had the same volume. Here it goes again, the woman beside me was impatient...again! I can sense it through her unspoken language. But when she noticed i glimpse at her, she immediately smiled. No signs of retaliation. I also noticed that if i go to mall with my jewelries on,  and with my best features, sales ladies were not so bitchy.

Was it just me? Or am I right to conclude that there are some people who treats others according to how they are dressed?

Why do some people treat with awe and respect those who speaks the English language fluently? Yet, laugh at people who have crooked English?

Why do some people respect those who are well dressed? And took lightly those people who are shabby on their eyes.

Do we really measure the value of a person according to ones physical appearance, status in life and intellect?

Must we really judge a book by its cover?

I think every one needs to be respected. Regardless of physical appearance, educational attainment, status in life or even manner of dressing, don't you think so?

Online Job for a Fee?

This morning, Vincent was surfing to the internet. He called my attention. He then showed me a website that is offering a home based job. Of course, who would not want a source of income? And so, I checked it out. Unfortunately, I realized it is one of those sites that has to be paid a certain amount before you could start working for them.

The nature of the job is that you will give your opinion about a certain product. Then you will be paid for it. Sounds good. On top of that, being paid for your honest opinion is believable.

It is said that you can earn as much as $30,000 a month for the task. You would have to buy something though, I  can not recall anymore the term used for what you will be paying for. You will be paying $70.00 rounded off . That is the portion that shatters me. How much is $70.00 in Philippine Peso? If the conversion rate is 46, then that would be 3,200.00 Philippine Peso. Wheew...would you pay that amount for a job that you are unsure of?

If you will type "work from home" in the search engine, surely many will come up. Surely one can say that internet has a vast array of working opportunity. Hey, my arms are wide open. I, for one, is earning significant amount through writing. Therefore, I could definitely attest that there is good money through internet work.
However, it took years before I am able to stumble to good paying jobs. I had been scammed on the process. Bottom line is that, while there are a vast array of work online, there are a lot of scams as well. I say we have to be very careful.  When I was new in the internet work, friends advised me never, never go to jobs where I would be required to pay a certain amount before I start working. I also read that in a number of articles I read. This said, I had been doubtful about jobs where I should be paying before starting to work.

How about you, had you known any body who gave money to a site  and really was able to land to a legit source of income? Had they received the payment they so deserve? More importantly, was their money returned through their income? It would be a welcome to know of some one who really earned income after paying for their job.

Personally, I am doubtful. Following logic, why would you give money to your employer so you could render service to them?

What do you think?

Younger Generation

We were standing in line for a taxi on our way home. It was our grocery schedule, you see. When it was our turn for the next available taxi, I immediately jumped in. I was in a hurry to get home. My thoughts were on the tasks waiting for me at home.

As soon as I sat inside the cab, I smelled something. Smell of food, actually. A faint smell could come really strong in an air conditioned and closed cab. That was when I noticed a plastic full of foods. The first thing that came to my mind was that a passenger left an unconsumed food. As I looked closer to the plastic, I realized that that content was not unconsumed after all. They were left-over of foods contained in a plastic bag. The bag was even wide open.

The taxi driver seemed to have read my mind. He said a group of students left the plastic bag. The students came from San Beda College, Recto. When they reached their destination, they left their trash behind. The plastic bag was there sitting at the back seat.

How would you feel if you were on my shoe?

I do not know really if these students were from San Beda College, Recto. I had not even seen them to know that. Maybe these students just happened to be in front of San Beda College when they got the taxi. Or, maybe there are really students of San Beda College. We can never really know.

The thing is that, they are students. As the driver even said "Tsk...tsk..mga estudyante pa naman!"  Let us not generalize. After all, not all students are irresponsible. However, incidents like these are quite disappointing. Do you know what was the first thing that came to my mind? "I wonder how these students are at home?" Do they just throw their garbage anywhere?

Our national hero had once said "Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan". The younger generations are the hopes of our country. After all, they are the next generation who will run this country. If these kids can not even learn how to deal with their own garbage, how could they handle bigger responsibilities?

Do you know that we can read people by how they reacted to and deal with little things? Mistakes in the past had thought me that lesson. Some might say this is a small matter. But really, what does this say about this group of students? What do you think?
Personally, I am hoping, really hoping, that this is not the picture of the younger generation.

Hopes For Filipino People

Yesterday, Noynoy Aquino had taken his oath as the 15th President of the Philippines. I was not able to watch the oath taking. However, basing on the glimpse and glances from the news, it is apparent that the Filipino people has high hopes that the new government will improve the lives of the Filipinos, especially those who are on the poverty level of the society.

The most that I could do is to read the statement of the president. I was not really able to watch the television that day. I would have to say that I honestly have nothing to say regarding the speech of Pres. Aquino. It is too early to speak. I know, though, that he will be facing a lot of problems ahead of him. I know, too, that no matter who seats in Malacanang, he will have his share of detractors along the way. Just wait after the honeymoon stage of his term. I think every president had had their share of bitter moments and countless criticism.

That said, it have nothing to say. I do have one thing in mind. When I heard a commentator mentioned that Filipinos have high hopes that our lives will progress from hereon because of the promise of the president, I can not help but to take a glimpse on the television screen.

Do not get me wrong. I am not saying that it is incorrect to have hope. However, our lives and our progress in terms of economic standing in the society is not necessarily, entirely dependent on the president. Yes, he should do his share. However, it is us, as individual who will improve the economic status of our lives. If we will not work hard, if we will maintain the crab mentality, manana habit and lack of discipline, I do not think that even Noynoy Aquino could help the Filipino people.

The change should begin with us. We are responsible for our selves and our lives. We can not say that it is up to the government to improve our lives. We have to do our share. We have to work hard. We must work smartly. Because unless we do, no president could help us.

Just a thought, an opinion, my friend.

TIME IS GOLD. TIME IS MONEY

Had you ever asked yourself what professionalism means? I suppose when we see a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer we think of the word professional. However, does the word professional automatically associates with the word professionalism? Can we honestly say that this diploma and passing the licensure examination is an automatic qualifier for professionalism? I do not know for you but in my book, they are different.
I hated going to the doctor. It is because every time I seek medical assistance, I ended up with a dreaded feeling. I felt I lost so much after that brief encounter with the doctor.
Before I proceed, I would like to make it clear that this is based on my personal view and experience. I will set one instance as an example. My mother have this particular doctor where she regularly goes for her check up. She persuaded me that If I would be having any medical concerns, I might as well go to her doctor. So when the chance came I did. She had her clinic at home and she opens at 7:00am. I went there at 6:50 am. After a long ordeal of waiting, her assistant called in to us at 10:30am. She said the doctor is ready. When it is my turn, she smiles with that fresh smile as if she have all the time in the world. Actually, she is good. However, I can not really feel the impact considering I waited for 3 ½ hours. When she was done with me, half of my day was already exhausted. And by what? What had happened in that span of half of that day? Actually this is not new to me. When I already have my medical card, I have the option to go to any accredited hospital. If and when it is an outpatient appointment, I have to wait for an average of two hours.
This happened to one of my co-workers as well. Our shift starts 2:00am to 11:00am. His grandma was sick. He accompanied her to a doctor. After lunch they went straight to the doctors office. Arriving at 1:00pm, they waited up until 4:00pm. Count consultation, buying the medicine prescribed, transportation hours consumed, they arrived home more or less 8:00pm. Bottom line, due to tiredness and exhaustion, He was late the next working day, lost attendance bonus in the amount of 5 thou and minutes deducted from him. He told me, it could have been different if the doctor arrived on time. I said, maybe there had been an emergency in the hospital. Maybe the doctor had an operation or something. Maybe...maybe. However, in the back of my mind, I can not help this one nagging thought. Is it not that operations are scheduled? Or, am I wrong? Hospital tasks are a matter of life and death. Doctors should be always on call. However, can all doctors honestly state that ALL, and absolutely ALL circumstances when their patient waited for long hours, is really because they are on the hospital on an emergency call. I think if one doctor could honesty state that he is on an emergency call and can not come as he promised, then advise the waiting patient through the assistant that he/she have an emergency call and will be arriving later on this or that time. Hence, the patient have the option if they would like to wait or come back.
One thing I am proud of in the call center industry- in terms of the agents- is that we value time. If our shift starts at 10:00pm. That means 9:59 up until 10:00. 10:01 is already late. So, if an agent have an attendance bonus of, say Php5,000. This means that logging in at 10:01 would automatically mean she or he already lost her 5,000 pesos for that month. We can not just smile and say, I had an emergency. Seconds lost have corresponding value, in money. Hence, if i go to a doctors appointment and I just asked permission from office, probability is that I would lose about a thousand for that consultation. That would constitute the doctors fee and the amount of the benefits and salary that I could have earned on those hours I waited. In one book I read, Being punctual is important because when we came in late, we actually stole from the person who waited for us. We stole this persons time. It is not actually for doctors alone. Some lawyers would set up an appointment and would arrive after one or two hours. What can you say? Specially when you have a pending complaint or a case being handled by this person.
I do not know for you but I think professionalism is not the Diploma nor the license that goes with the profession. Professionalism is a bundle of working effectively, adherence to working and social ethics, our attitude towards our work and towards people, and being on the dot at all times. This is the few components of the word. After all, TIME IS GOLD. TIME IS MONEY.
Note: This is NOT to stereo type all doctors, lawyers or any professional. If one is respectful to the time of clients, customers, patients and other people, then clearly this post in NOT in reference to that person. However, If one believes that this post reflects his or her working ethics, then please allow this post as a way to see the people on the other shoe and hopefully would be a ground for addressing the areas of improvement.
Take care every one.

BEGGARS AND SYMPATHY

One of those regular days when i heard the door bell rang. When i opened the door, a woman in dirty clothes was standing in my door step. As i approached, i could smell that she had not taken her bath for maybe a number of days. She held her arms and told me “ Can you give me some money please so i could buy food. I had not eaten since yesterday and i am very hungry. I feel so weak”. My heart fell for her. I thought i would grab a food . Told her to seat in the wooden chair right beside the gate and wait for me. Hence, i replied, “If i will give you money, you still have to walk to buy your food. Why don’t you take a seat and i will give you food. It is not much but i am pretty sure it will sustain you for now. Just give me a minute”. With that she said, “I do not mind walking, i would prefer you give me money”. I replied. “No worry, it is not a bother for me, it will take just a number of minutes and you can already eat”. When i lead her to the wooden chair she just stood. Her face hardened and with irritation in that once soft voice, stated “If you do not want to give me money, never mind. I am asking for money, not your food”. Before i could speak she turned her back and left, walked briskly until i could see her no more. I could not relate to her logic. She is asking for money to buy food but when i am already giving her the food, she stubbornly refused.
I am really not that innocent, you see. When i was a volunteer, a priest gave me an advice. He noted that with what i do in the mission then, my enemy would be myself. If and when i stand before a person who appears to be in dire need, i should be able to differentiate the real need from those who faked being in need. The greatest hindrance is my sympathy. In the real world, there are those who are in dire need because they refused to work. The more i extend to this kind of people, the more i push them to poverty. For those who are religious, the more i sin. Why? Because instead of helping these people get away from their situation, i helped them indulge in slothfulness and laziness. Unfortunately, there are those who uses poverty as an excuse to get the sympathy from people. That is very, very sad indeed.

EMOTION

We all have our mood swings. Who doesn’t? I think it is perfectly fine for us to have these moods every now and then. Most of the time moods transcends into strong emotion. It could be envy, anger, love or simply happiness. During younger years, I had this perception that emotion was divided into two. The good and the bad. If I was feeling the negative emotion, I am bad. If I am feeling a positive emotion then I am good. Elders told me that being angry or envious is bad. Hence, when I got angry, adult would tell me, “you are bad”. As I grew into adulthood. I realized that there is no bad or good emotion. Anger, fury, hostility is a feeling. Feeling is part of being a human being. These emotions are basically the same as love, compassion, happiness. What makes them good or bad is how we react to such emotion. Let us say Mario got mad. He could either hit the person who caused him to be mad or overcome and control his emotion. If he chooses the first option, hitting makes his emotion bad because he opted to do the bad decision. If he chooses to overcome his anger then that is when he converted the emotion into a positive result. Now, let us go to an emotion which is labeled as good. They say love is a good emotion. What if Maria fell in love with a family man? Love is good, right? If Maria chooses to take this man away from his family because she loves him. That is a bad decision. However, if she reinforces to him that he have a family and he should know his right place, then that is when I could state that the emotion is good. Simply because Maria used her mind before reacting to the emotion, which is love. Hence, for me, any emotion can not be tagged as good or bad. What makes it bad or good is how we react to such emotion. It is important that as adult, we are always in control of that emotion. Simply because that will determine the correctness or the wrongness of such emotion.

Any input?

STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS

There are no classes in Manila, Philippines come Monday, July 27 due to the coming State of The Nations Address [SONA] of President Arroyo. On top of SONA, it is also the grand Anniversary of Iglesia Ni Cristo. It is the 95th Anniversary Celebration of Iglesia ni Cristo.
From one of the news, it had been stated that President Arroyo will push Charter Change in the State of The Nation Address. I do not know about you guys but I do not feel comfortable about Charter Change. My father is a lawyer so law is his field. He said there are really some part of the Constitution that should have been changed for the better. After all, the Constitution should serve its purpose, which is to protect its people. The Constitution should be for the people and by the people. However, the intent of the government to pursue Charter Change is questionable. The purpose of the current Charter Change is very much shaded with doubt. As a private citizen, I have the fear that once government successfully pass the Charter Change, the benefit will not be for the people but for the person who is on the highest seat of power. Of course, the benefit will be extended to the people who proceeds with the president. I can not imagine what will happen to this poor country if that happen.
Who is the real culprit? Is it just the media exaggerating the information being passed on? Is it the critics of the government? Or is it really the people in power who are on their stance to protect their benefits no matter what. Private citizens like me may never get the answer. However, the observation of one of my colleague stands strong, corruption in the government is really rampant. There is no room for shame anymore.
It is very sad. I believe Filipinos are talented and brainy. This is a land of beautiful and talented species. However, the next step to progress seemed so far. Our people have this mentality that we have to go to another country to acquire a stable living. We have this notion that there is a slow progress if we will stay here in our own land. I can not blame those people who thinks like this because if you will look around, these people have a strong point. If the common citizen have the traits that can pull us down – like procrastination and crab mentality, it is being aggravated and sealed by the people who are in the seat of power. Instead of serving the very purpose of the word “service to the people”, some people in the government would do every thing they can to stay in power- not to serve but to be served. My poor country – always in misery.

THE REAL BEAUTY.......WITHIN

A beauty walked in your front. Pretty face, great stature, perfect physique. What a beauty! Regardless of whether you are a male or a female, there is definitely a beauty that could make you look twice, or thrice. Sometimes, a glance is not enough. But then, is physical appearance the true measurement for the word “beauty”?

I remembered in college when our professor asked us to define “beauty”. There were numerous definition given. One fellow student answered “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. Too many adjectives came out. Pretty, nice in the eyes and stimulates ones senses. If you will sum up those description, it will boil down to positive emotion. Merriam- Webster says that beauty means “qualities that give pleasure to the senses or exalt the mind”.

I challenge my reader to think about this scenario. If one person does something that hurt you, pissed you off real deep, when that person comes in mind how would you feel? I think the word is ugly. Pardon me for saying, that person who did a terrible thing and had made you feel that way is not beautiful.

Let us go to the other side of emotion. If a person does something good, spoken kindly and touched your heart, treated you kindly, how does it feel thinking about that person? It puts a smile in that face of yours, am I right? It brightens your face. That is beauty. Would you disagree that you felt beauty just thinking of this kind hearted person?

That emotion you felt, is it influenced by how that person looked like? I do not think so! It is not the persons appearance that contributed to those emotion. It is the deeds that leaves a lingering mark behind.

Each individual have a perception on the word “beauty”. I believe that our eyes does not necessarily have the final say when it comes to beauty. Not when a human being is concerned. When it comes to people, it is not even our personal impression towards the person that matters. What matters is the character and the deeds of that person. Meekness, humbleness, selfless attitude may be over rated for some. However, it is these traits that make up the true meaning of beauty. That is the real beauty….the beauty within.

PHILLIPPINE, ON THE VERGE OF RECESSION??!!

I was reading a newspaper the other day. One of the news caught my eye. Not that it is extra ordinary or anything like that! just that it is one of the issues that would affect each filipino and the country as a whole. This news stated that despite the slow movement of economic growth registered on the first quarter of 2009, we will not go into recession. That is a good news actually. Speaking of possible recession, this had been contributed by many factors, as some analyst stated. It could be the sharp slowdown of consumers expense rate and the drop of business investments. In fact, National Statistics Coordination Board (NSCB) stated that we are on the verge of recession. Palace issued the statement that it would took two consecutive quarters of slow growth to declare that we are on the verge of recession. One quarter of negative growth would not warrant national recession.

Just the idea of recession is alarming. I do not know if it is only a coincidence that every time i watched the side of the palace, it would always be a language projecting "every thing is under control" mode. Maybe it is just me. Maybe i become a pessimist! Or maybe our government must always project an "everything under control" mode to ensure to the public that we are still under the protective blanket of the government, isnt it?! At any rate, i am hoping, and i am sure our officials and the palace as a whole, have a back-up plan and the precautionary measures in case we came face to face to an unpleasant predicament. As the saying goes, always expect the best but prepare for the worst.

Thank you for reading my views and always take care!

SENATE BILL NO. 2317 and MAGNA CARTA FOR WOMEN

The senate passed Bill No. 2317, focusing on protecting minors against pornography. Senate Bill No. 2317 is also known at The Anti-Child Pornography Act.This bill aimed to protect minors against pornography and exploitation. This bill had been approved but is still pending in the House Of Representative. Personally, i hope our congressmen would include this bill as one of their priorities. Senate house also approved Magna Carta for Womens' Month. Magna Carta promotes elimination of discrimination and any form of abuse against women. Fortunately, i could state that in the Philippines, though considered still a third world country, is less discriminative with women. In employment, gender is not an issue when it comes to hiring, salary rate and promotion. When it comes to compensation, salary rate is based in ones' job description and position, not in gender. Filipino women are also in the front lines of economic progress. Despite of the fact that Philippines is less discriminative with women, i do hope our congress or the House Of Representative would take into serious attention the Magna Carta for women and the Anti-Child Pornography Act. Penalize those who exploits and displays in public any form of pornographic material, specially when it involves a minor, Hoping so!!!!

Have a great day every one!!

SUCCESS--A FRAME OF MIND?!!

My path came across one of my professors yesterday. Had a little chit chat then bid a warm farewell. We are both in a hurry. Seeing him made me remember one of his remarks. He said “Parents have a wrong mentality when it comes to visioning their childrens success. We always say—Study well my child so that one day you will be employed in a stable company." He said “We strive hard to send our children to school only to be an employee. My professor says that our children is conditioned that success is striving hard to get the Diploma and end up being an employee of a company, painstakingly facing the corporate jungle and climb his/her way up to the highest ladder. That is success. And this visualization is passed on from the parent to the child to the grand children and so on. He said one of the reason why our neighboring country is so much ahead of us is because their frame of mind is : I will have my own, I may start from scratch but at least this is mine, I will treasure this and make it big. Through persistence and effort this small business can become big..a company..with further expansion. That is the frame of mind. Have my own business. Take Japan for instance. China as well, we know that China is very business oriented as well. One Chinese peer once told me, “This is my business. A family business that will sustain me and the next of my generation.” Unfortunately, we Filipinos don’t think that way. We goal on being an employee. It would be a big time to be the manager or the vice-president , VIP, but very seldom, being the owner. Come to think of it, is this the reason why the business owners in our own native land are Americans, Chinese, Japanese? We are employees of foreigner in our own country. No offense but in a way, my good professor have a strong point. I could even say i do agree. Dont you think so too?

Just a thought..an opinion.. coming from a very radical but so much respected friend and a professor of mine!

Have a great day, my reader and my friend!!

MANGGAGAWANG PILIPINO

Mag kahalong lungkot at inis.

Isang opinyon at pag susuri.
